Pre-purchase questions re. SG-2220
-
I am considering purchasing the SG-2220 but before that I have a couple of questions that I hope someone can answer for me.
I had a look around but couldn't find the answers anywhere - so I apologise if this has already been covered ad nauseam.
Presently I have a a little VESA computer with three ethernet ports (only using two) with pfsense on a SD-card. It works well and I have been satisfied with the solution. I have fiber at 90/90 and the pfsense box is placed right after the fiber box.
I am looking to change the hardware because it does not power up after power loss. I have to physically press the on/off button on the front.
Recently (this week) the box have started to drop out and then return again hours later. Possibly the power supply is getting old or the box is breaking down - I have no idea and I am presently more than 8000 km from home, so I can't really see what the problem is (and of course it happens when I am abroad for a month).
My questions with regard to SG-2220:
-
Does SG-2220 power on automatically when the power returns after a power outage?
-
Is the software on SG-2220 the same as the pfsense that you can dl for your DIY solution? (I assume it is - just want to make sure.)
-
Does the SG-2220 come with everything I need to set it up? I assume the onboard storage will be enough? I don't need WiFi (I have an access point).
-
Can I transfer my settings from my old box to SG-2220? I assume I can, just making sure.
-
Is the power supply external? Is it possible to buy a new power supply when the old one wears out?
Thank you for your help in advance.

If their was a power outage, perhaps the storage gets filled with zeros or garbage or it would not be
able to get up at one time smooth and liquid working. This could not told by anybody. Is the software on SG-2220 the same as the pfsense that you can dl for your DIY solution?
(I assume it is - just want to make sure.)No, if you get a SG-xx unit from the pfSense store and you register your unit you would be able to
download a ADI image that you are able to install on your SG-2220. But if you want, you could also
get the community image of pfSense without any kind of pre-tuning and configuration, surely you can
do so, but it is more suggested to go with the pre-tuned one.Does the SG-2220 come with everything I need to set it up? I assume the onboard storage will be enough? I don't need WiFi (I have an access point).
If you will only use pfsense as a pure firewall it will be enough, if you want to run squid and other packets
on top of this I will be sure you should go with a M.2 drive. Can I transfer my settings from my old box to SG-2220?
I assume I can, just making sure. You might be able to swap over the config file, but perhaps you must do some custom work on this
to get it back working right. Is the power supply external? Is it possible to buy a new power supply when the old one wears out
Yes this would be able if the old one dies you might be able to get a newer one matching and according
to the numbers of the older one. -

When my server (Synology) looses power it always restarts when the power comes back on. I would expect the SG-2220 to do the same; of course something might happen so that it doesn't power on, but this should only happen very rarely. Can you elaborate?
I was not aware there would be a specific version of pfsense for SG-2220. I will of course use that one.
I don't even know what Squid is. However, is it possible to expand the storage at a later date or should it be done from start?
I can see you are from Germany. As I live in Denmark I will probably buy the SG-2220 from this shop: https://shop.voleatech.de/en/shop/sg-2220/
Are you familiar with that shop? Can you recommend it?Again, thank you in advance, I appreciate the help.

It's generally a setting in the BIOS/UEFI.

The SG-2220 automatically restarts when power returns after an outage.

Yes, I bought a Transcend MTS600 M.2 SSD 32GB SATA III, MLC works great!
You maybe have to do a BIOS update to use the additional storage. As I live in Denmark I will probably buy the SG-2220 from this shop: https://shop.voleatech.de/en/shop/sg-2220/
Are you familiar with that shop? Can you recommend it?I've ordered 2 of the SG-2220 at Voleatech, everything worked great.
pfSense itself might have some problems with availability - but this shouldn't be the case at the moment. -
To all of you:
Thank you for your replies - very useful.
It looks like the SG-2220 is just what I need.
I will order it one of these days from Voleatech.
Thank you again.
