USB flash drive broke, RAM disk setting on next install?
-
I had a massive pfsense crash the other day and it seemed that the USB key which I barely used before installing pfsense on it 6 months ago (I've used CF before). I'm suspecting the USB flash drive broke because of too many read/writes to it. I hadn't done any settings to prevent this and I don't know if pfsense does this on default.
I rapidly installed pfsense on a new thumb drive and I'll have to figure out what to do next. I stumbled upon the RAM disk settings under Advanced settings (I've seen it before but didn't think much of it as I was under the impression that pfsense made that distinction by itself)
My box has plenty of RAM, 8GB and so making a RAM disk for the same amount as the flash drive wouldn't be a problem. Is this what I need to do to prevent plenty of read/writes or was I just unlucky with my flash drive I used and I don't need to do anything? If it matters I didn't "install" from one medium into the usb key, I just wrote the whole 4GB image to it and went from there.

Sounds like you're using nanobsd, which has /var and /tmp as RAM disks by default. If that's what you were using before, it wasn't writes that killed it.

I sadly can't remember if used the nano or the other one on the former install but this time I used the Nano and if the ram disk is on by default (even though it doesn't show in the gui https://i.imgur.com/EjFGlDy.png ) I'll be fine.
Thank you for your quick response :)

It shows. The fact you can't disable RAM disks there tells you you're on nano.
