Go for the i3. It will support 1GB WAN throughput and if need be can work as a good HTPC. Install KODI and it will fly.

one of the problems with the i3 is what case and motherboard?  I need a smaller case but I will need to fit my dual Intel PCIe card in it…

            Motherboard:  ASrock Z170M-ITX/AC
            Case:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129081

You need a low profile NIC bracket if your 2 port NIC is a regular size card.
With an additional $50, you can go with Skylake i5.

that case might fit the bill.  would you choose that motherboard over the Gigabyte?  do you have it running Pfsense?

I have found Asrock to be much better than Gigabyte

thanks for that link, much appreciated.

                      ended up ordering:

                      1 x ($189.99) Intel Core i5-6400 6 MB Skylake Quad-Core 2.7 GHz LGA 1151 65W BX80662I56400 Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 530 $189.99
                      1 x ($114.99) GIGABYTE GA-H170N-WIFI (rev. 1.0) LGA 1151 Intel H170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard $114.99
                      1 x ($74.99) Antec ISK 310-150 Black / Silver 0.8mm cold rolled steel Mini-ITX Desktop Computer Case 150W Power Supply $74.99
                      1 x ($61.99) G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Intel Z170 Platform / Intel X99 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-2133C15D-16GVR $61.99
                      Subtotal: $441.96
                      Tax: $0.00
                      Shipping and Handling: $9.89
                      Total Amount: $451.85

hope this is all compatible and works well.  Now I just have to find a low profile bracket for my Intel dual Gigabit card that i think i threw away as we were downsizing.

added an Intel 120gb SSD for a total of about $500 US, which is about $665 CDN.
