Hey guys, hoping I can get some help here.  Bought new MiniITX computer (gigabyte ga-h170n-wifi) with an i5, 16gb of ram and dual intel on board and an Intel SSD.  All the time I look at my computer and have the yellow exclamation that there is no internet.  The only thing I can do is reboot pfsense and it mostly comes back up.  Sometimes it doesn't grab an IP on the WAN, so I power cycle the cable modem and it works again. Sometimes for a day, sometimes for 5 minutes, it is VERY frustrating.  There are 2 intel lan ports built in and I have a dual port intel PCIe add on card.  I just tried disabling the internal cards and just run the addon card.  Not sure if there is a conflict, it is just totally random and there isn't ever anything in the system log.  I spent $700 on this router and am at my wits end.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I don't know if it is a UEFI thing or ??  I upgraded to 2.3 to see if it fixes but it didn't.  It just did it again as I am writing this post.  I could ping the router, ping the WAN from my ISP but no internet, then just came back up without even a reboot.  Please help.

oh, i forgot, i tried a 2nd dual intel PCIe card, same result.

I think you may want to add [ /code ] to the end of this post to shorten it up.
Been reading your posts and noticed you have been swapping nics quite often. For the sake of a base line you should pick the one you know worked and stay with it just incase your ISP is having to keep track of your mac address as some do as the registered device.
I would start with direct connect a computer with a firewall to that modem to test it first. May be a setting your missing  or other hardware.
Try another Network cable than what you are using now, and on and on. I can get frustrated to the point of walking away and then regroup then start one step at a time and check and test as you go.  ;)  don,t throw the baby out with the bath water as they say.
Like to help but having hard time keeping track. The Logs I noticed the date stamp was pretty messed up also. Not sure why.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.  I know it gets frustrating.  I don't know if any card has worked reliably as it keeps going down.  Now what I did was disable both onboard Intel Nics and am just using the dual Intel PCIe card.  No VPN, no separate wireless nic, just very simple.  It has been up for 5 hours but I was out with the kids.  I thought it might be the cable modem but when i swapped it out for my regular Asus, it works perfect.  I will not keep updating the nightly builds either.  I would gladly pay someone to figure this out or even buy the $200 quad port from the PFsense store if I knew that would fix the problem, just don't want to pay the $400 for PFsense support sub, that is too much for me..  Would just love to even get it down to a hardware or a software thing.  I have swapped all cables too..

So at present it is up with the ASUS as modem/router.

no, PFsense has been running for 5 hours but we haven't really been using it.  I also took the case off the PFsense computer in case the NIC was overheating..  Sometimes when it goes down i can ping the PFsense box and sometimes not.  Now everything has been working for a few hours but that has happened before and i thought it was fixed.  I bought kick ass components too so it is pi@@ing me off.  Now at least my son is happy, he is able to play Battlefront on the PS4.  It's really hard when you have such a internet hungry family, sheesh :)

What version are you on. Also have you checked the DNS logs. Is unbound running. I have to restart it after any reboot. Do not go by the icon but actually check the logs.
lol keep the money your internet bill with your kids is going to hurt. ;)

Next time this happens ping 192.168.100.1 and see if you can reach it.

I am with Shaw cable, the modem is in bridged mode so I cannot log into it i don't think.  I just pinged that ip and it worked but I am up right now.

:) it would actually be better to pay someone so i can get back to enjoying some time with my family.  At this point, they think i am crazy.

I am on one of the 2.3 RC nightly builds.  it all started when i bought this new computer and 2.2.6 kept screwing up, that is why I went up to 2.3. I didn't check the DNS logs..  Just under diagnostics?  Here are a couple pics of my main screen and DNS screen.

Also in DNS Resolver also try just the WAN for Outbound interface not ALL, also it does not look like you hilighted the Network lans also. Does shaw have working IPv6 now,@chpalmer.
Would like you to go to Status/System Logs/ resolver and check the latest log time if it is not within a couple of minutes it may need restart.

Hey guys, just went down again.  Didn't get any yellow exclamation mark on the network icon.  Went over to cable modem and router and there was no status lights lit on the NIC that is my WAN and also the port on the cable modem that is connected to the WAN wasn't lit.  Had to power cycle the modem to get it back up.  Shit, i was hoping it was fixed.. Here are a couple of the screens I got.  Thanks  so much guys for trying to help me with this.  Cable modem is a Cisco DPC3825.

                                  So- simple stuff

Have you tried wiggling your ethernet cable between the modem and the router?

                                  Tried replacing same cable?

What lights are on the front of the modem now and then when your connection is down?

                                  Modem stats would be wonderful…

                                  Triggering snowflakes one by one..

Just changed the cable and the port that it was plugged into to rule out the port and cable..  When the internet is up, all lights are solid and since it is a modem/gateway, the port that goes to PFsense WAN port blinks with activity.  When it went down, everything was solid (including ONLINE light) EXCEPT the port that is connect to WAN of PFsense was out.

Well for what it is worth, I doubt SHAW is IPv6 for the last mile yet as rumor has it and they are behind Telus which I am on, so I would run IPv4 only including the WAN.  I do not use IPv6 at all, as in disabled completely with PFSense. Also the DNS Resolver settings need touch up. Your Outbound should be WAN instead of default all, then select your LAN,s for the other setting which in the photo,s show they are NOT selected. Finally the last snapshot is probably going to be the Release coming this Tuesday I have heard.
It may help to update to latest.
IPv6 is still long ways off before you will need to turn it on.

Did some checking and when the Cisco DPC3825 is in bridged mode only port one works.

you live anywhere near Coquitlam?  :)

I was wondering about IPv6, i will try to disable it.  I will also fix up the DNS resolver settings.  When the final 2.3 comes out I will upgrade to that.

Here is my plan of attack.

Since I switched cables and switched ports on the cable modem, i don't think it is a cable or the port.  I guess it has to be either the cable modem itself, pfsense, the Intel dual PCIe NIC or maybe a setting on the motherboard to do with PCIe or something.

I am going to get Shaw in to replace the cable modem, that will take that out of the equation.  If I keep having problems, i will pull the dual NIC and use the 2 built in Intel NICS, that should eliminate the NIC. I also have another computer I can try to completely remove the MiniITX build as a problem.

Man, what a nightmare.. Sounds like a couple more weeks of internet/family hell :)
