2.3 clean install issue on SG-2440
-
Downloaded pfSense-netgate-memstick-ADI-2.3-RELEASE-amd64 for my SG-2440, but could not get it working with quick/easy install.
The install starts as normal. I am eventually prompted to enter serial number and other information. I select the defaults and once I proceed I get the error attached in screenshot1. See log.txt for the information provided when I view log.
Once the install fails, I cannot seem to boot from the USB again. It is like the quick/easy install is auto-selecting the USB key and trying to install pfSense 2.3 onto that.
To test my theory, I performed a custom install without issue. During the custom install I noticed that da0 is my USB memstick, and da1 is my eMMC storage. I selected da1 in custom install and accepted all defaults - no issue. See screenshot2.
Is it possible that there is an issue with the quick/easy install, and it is attempting to install over the USB key instead of eMMC storage??
EDIT - I was going through pfSense install documentation and it appears that quick/easy install will select the first disk it sees as the destination. In my case, this was my memstick, which is probably why I was having these issues. Seems a bit strange that this is the expected behaviour. Should I be using a certain type of USB key?

Also, more minor but probably should be cleaned up is that factory image is showing "Community Edition" underneath pfSense logo. I have confirmed that is factory image (pfSense-netgate-memstick-ADI-2.3-RELEASE-amd64.img) and I have the AWS VPC option.

Not sure how I didn't see that in testing, I apparently didn't hit the right combination of things.
Use the custom install and pick da1 and it'll be fine. I'm looking into the root issue.

I can confirm that custom install does indeed work once you select correct disk, and doesn't prompt you with that dialogue to enter serial number and other order details.
Question: I restored config from 2.3 RC Community edition. By restoring this config, do I potentially lose some of the optimizations in the SG-2440 factory image? I just want to make sure I have the optimal settings for my pfsense hardware.

Anyone have any insight into my last question?

You're fine restoring the CE config to factory, that won't impact anything in that regard.
The memsticks on the portal have been updated to fix the original issue you noted btw.

Perfect, thanks!

cmb, did the CE memstick image also require an update? I need it for another system and downloaded at release, but have not installed yet.

No.
