Any country export restrictions for pfSense or the hardware in the pfSense store
-
We are considering deploying pfSense in the following countries:
-
Mexico
-
Brazil
-
Venezuela
-
India
-
Germany
-
Poland
-
Korea
-
Russia
-
China
-
Australia
I normally recommend hardware from the pfSense store. All hardware would be purchased in the US, configured and then shipped to the countries above. Are there any export restrictions on the hardware or software for these countries?
Thanks,
Frank -

Kind of strange to be asking for legal advice. This has nothing to do with PFSense and everything to do with the laws of where you are. I'm not sure about the hardware, but PFSense is open source and anyone can get or use the project.

Actually it's not strange when you are asking about purchasing hardware with software pre-installed. The manufacturer of the hardware/software should have an opinion if their product is legal to export from the US (where the manufacturer is located).

An overriding question would be are any of the recipients on the Denied Parties List?

Thanks for the link. However, it doesn't answer my question.
As I stated in my original post, the plan would be to order them in the US, configure & send to the countries listed.

"Denied Parties List" - Where/what is that?

That is a question for your attorneys, not an internet forum.

Denied Parties List refers to the list of parties (people, organizations, countries) that the government prohibits sales/exports to. Here is an example screening site:

Most governments have such a list. Some governments also have import restriction lists. Additionally, many technologies have export reporting requirements as well. pfSense and associated hardware will almost certainly have such a requirement.
In general, if you are not familiar with the export/import laws of the various countries, you should engage legal counsel before selling anything internationally.

There are often two ends of a line! That means that in the US are existing export regulations and in some
other countries are import restrictions for cryptography. As an example here in Germany you it is aloowed
to import cryptographic products, either in software or hardware, but "strong arm" is not allowed for any
part. But there are often no rules without any exceptions related to the todays given crypto abilities of the
hardware such as AES-NI inside of the Intel Core i7 or Xeon CPUs. It would be the best to consult a transporter
company to realize that export and import part, they are familiar with that stuff and are doing it for many greater
companies or wholesaler.
