Boot issue with 2.3/2.3.1 (Realtek 8139)
-
hi,
my system no longer boots when going for 2.2.6 ->2.3 (or 2.3.1) or when doing a clean boot with 2.3/2.3.1
i have a part of my 2.2.6 boot added for reference.
with 2.3.X it stops after this line:
rl0: <realtek 10="" 8139="" 100basetx="">port 0xe800-0xe8ff mem 0xfebfdc00-0xfebfdcff irq 16 at device 2.0 on pci3the realtek driver for my Gbit interfaces however works fine:
re0: <realtek 8111="" 8168="" b="" c="" cp="" d="" dp="" e="" f="" g="" pcie="" gigabit="" <br="">the RT8139 driver is "sys/dev/mii/rlphy.c"

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=rl&sektion=4&apropos=0&manpath=FreeBSD+10.3-RELEASE+and+Portsoptions i am looking at to be 100% sure its this driver problem:
- i can check if i can disable this type of nic in the bios
- boot a live distro of freebsd 10.3
other suggestions appreciated.
thanks,

I'm not sure any of us still have anything with those dodgy old rl NICs in them. They were awful when they did work. Don't you have anything from this decade you can drop in there instead?

its an old 6 port 'router' …
ok,
i was able to disable my old nic interfaces (the gigabit are still active) and retried.now im getting some vm_thread_new;kstack allocation failed.... panic....
doesnt sound good...
(update: i used the extra boot options like safe mode etc)
the good thing is freebsd10.1-mini_usb does launch correctly.
i get the root prompt and my nics are recognised
