Proper shutdown question
-
Well…I decided to turn on my server today and somehow I thought the hard drive was failing because I was getting a lot of errors, look at the screenshots below. So I sat here for almost five hours now fiddling around trying to fix it and I finally got it working again with a fresh install. Why would something like that happen when I'm shutting it down? Maybe something got stuck up or was doing an update that I was unaware of? I was on the latest version and was updated so I don't think that interfered with anything. I'm looking on my web gui and I don't see anything where I can have it shutdown by itself instead of me doing it manually and maybe messing up something. Maybe I'm not seeing that option since I'm blind? But now I'm scared too even shut it down because I think this problem will happen again. Thoughts on this?

They don't use the windows based term "Shut down" in this FREEBSD made product. They use the term "HALT SYSTEM" so you can find that under Diagnostics > Halt System or alternatively Diagnostics > Reboot.
I'm not PF Sense expert, but I figured those messages meant the drive pfsense was installed on was dying. Someone else can probably tell you more about those.

That ATA error is likely because the drive is dying. Guessing it'll probably come back, might just not be hitting the part of the disk that's problematic post-reinstall for some reason. Maybe next power cycle or some future power cycle it comes back. Check SMART on the drive, though it being clean isn't necessarily indicative of no issue.

I couldn't even check it, it has a output/input parse error.
I believe my HDD died on it unfortunately. Every time I shut it down and try booting it backup I get a ton of errors and now when I tried turning it on I got kernel not found.
I'm gonna replace the HDD/SATA cable and see what happens.
