I know that pfSense comes with ClamAV as the antivirus, which allows it to scan HTTP traffic using Squid proxy (and HTTPS, with the proper configuration). Is it possible to replace/amend the ClamAV antivirus with another commercial/free antivirus (Avast, Kaspersky, Norton, etc.) to perform the same function?

        Not at this time.

If any of the vendors have a FreeBSD-compatible version of their antivirus and it also is capable of being used by HAVP or other similar add-ons, then it might be possible in the future, but I wouldn't hold my breath…

          Any news on this?

BTW: what (commercial) alternative anti virus/malware scan engines do exist for FreeBSD?

As far as I know there are no up to date commercial AV products for FreeBSD. There was one such product by Kapersky but it's been abandonware for years:
