      I am presently running 2.2.6
I am planning on using another disk to copy my present 2.2.6 to a smaller slice on the new disk, then to install 2.3.1 on an other slice on the new disk? Is that possible

To copy the disk I was thinking of dump | restore but restore is not available on 2.2.6 installation. Can I copy using dd when the old partition is bigger than the new partition? Of shall I use tar ?

You can do it with nano, otherwise just backup the 2.2.6 config and upgrade. If it goes south for some reason, re-install 2.2.6 and restore the config.
