PfSense pre-configured as the ultimate free home web filtering solution
-
Here's the bottom line. I'm passionate about home users being able to offer safe, reliable internet access to their family. In order to do it for my familiy, I've spent the last couple of years searching for the ultimate free home web filtering solution. I won't get into the multiple versions of free or pseudo free software that I've tried, but suffice it to say I finally landed on pfSense. In my mind, it offers the most functionality, flexibility and usability of any open source firewall project…
However, there is a catch. Flexibility and functionality usually equal complexity. While the pfSense UI is great for IT professionals, I've noted that there are many times that new or less technical users are on these forums asking questions about how to setup and configure pfSense, Squid, FW rules, and Dansguardian to meet there home network needs.
So... I've done my best to make it easy for everyone. If you're interested in a very stripped down pfSense 2.1 setup that is focused on home web filtering needs, see this post http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,68927.msg379573.html#msg379573. The next post in the thread has links to the files and screenshots of the "appliance" install.
Please note... I'm supplying the above only because I think it's important and may be helpful to some... I'd love to have some help setting this up in a more formal way if anyone is interested...
