PfSense, piece of crap software?
-
Hi
I must say after installing and started using pfSense my first feeling was quit god. But that has changed over time now and I feel more and more annoyed
over this crappy program.Even thou I doing configs the exact same way and added all kind of Internet expertis into this problem I've came to realize that the program doesn't work.
For example, I configured 4 separate vlans, added one more and the DHCP server goes down on that new vlan. No chance to get it to work either.Deleting all configs and setting pfSense to factory default, added 2 vlans and the third one… Yep you guessed it. DHCP server doesn't start, tried to restart
it both manually and router reboot but nothing helps.Have tried several times after that even setting pfsense back to factory default a couple of times, the result varies but as most 4 vlans have worked simultaneous.
Hardware checked and nothing is broken or would pose any problem to pfSense installation. My NIC card is a Intel V1000 Pro Quad, read that it needs a buffer
memory adjustment so I did that to, still won't work. (kern.ipc.nmbclusters="1000000") some hardware specs. Core2 duo, 4gb memory, 320gb HDD, Foxconn GX41
motherboard. pfSense 2.3.1-RELEASE-p1 (amd64)... -
Well, if your just trying to vent your spleen, then opinion noted and you can go home now.
If you're actually looking for help, then I 'd start by noting that pfSense has been successfully installed by (at least) many 100's of thousands.
You may have a particularly odd scenario that makes things tougher than normal, but it's still probably doable.
If you actually want to solve your problem, I'd humbly suggest you start by leaving the attitude on your side of the keyboard and post your setup in the "Installation" forum.
If you make any kind of effort to actually try and describe and then resolve your issue in a logical, step by step fashion, you'll find people here more than willing to help.
It's up to you.

I doubt you will get much help with a poor attitude like that. Coming in here with a "pfSense is SHIT" style of post, hoping to goad someone into helping you, will most likely get you ignored and/or downvoted.

Well that might be the case but as for my opinion it stands strong. Second I didn't asked for help in this post, I've described what has happened and the reason why I think it is not so god program. o.O I'm not a hater, just a irritated user right now :( I'm still using pfSense because it has really god potential :)
I sure understand if I step on some ones toes but perhaps that is a god thing sometimes, things tend to get vented that way and the end result often comes out far better then anticipated. And do believe me when I'm saying I love OpenSource and appreciate their work.

Why are my setup odd? I know several techies whom uses Vlans all the time. Both easier and more safer. I uses it to separate my production net from guest and WiFi users. I also have a different vlan for support use when dealing with infected computers ore cellphones, no risk of them getting into my production net.Do you think this is a solvable problem, fine I'll love to write a post in Installation or networking.
-
Your configuration is odd probably because you're failing to mention something important. Many people use VLANs and of the hundreds of thousands of people who have no issues, some number of them have many VLANs of both LAN and WAN types, and they're fine.

motherboard. pfSense 2.3.1-RELEASE-p1 (amd64)...Have you checked the system logs? Specifically under the DHCP logs.
Did you run a dmesg to check for errors too?
Have you tagged all the VLANs on the switch port?
I've never encountered such an issue on working hardware and I do have setups with >10 vlans and they work just fine without any hiccups.
You probably failed to configure something somewhere along the way (or misconfigured something like IP subnet ranges).

Without knowing the config the only thing I can think of is trying to serve a 10.0.0.0/8 with DHCP and it dies to lack of memory.
Post relevant parts of the config (Interfaces, VLAN's, DHCP config) for people to check if there's something wrong with them.

As mentioned multiple times already without some details of your configuration kind of hard to offer you any advice.
What I can tell you is I am running multiple vlans, 3 tagged on 1 interface and then other interfaces with just native untagged networks on them. And this is on a aging hp n40l with pfsense as just 1 vm of many on it..
Have not had any problems with any vlans, and if your dhcp server would not start then there would be something in the dhcp server log on why, etc.
There are plenty of people here willing to help you find your problem, but without details there is nothing that we can do.
