I am using the shrew soft vpn client to connect to my pfsense box running 2.3.1. I can see all my lan devices but I cannot surf the internet, as soon as the client connects I lose my internet connection and can only browse the remote local network. If I do an ipconfig in my laptop the shrew soft adapter says that it's gateway is 0.0.0.0.

      Any help will be appreciated.

Can you ping to the Internet by IP? Try 8.8.8.8. Might need to assign a DNS server that's reachable over the VPN. If IP connectivity to the Internet works, then it's likely a DNS issue.

You can also try to enable the "Provide a list of accessible networks to clients" under IPSec->Mobile Clients

"Provide a list of accessible networks to clients"  is enable under Ipsec-> Mobile clients.

I was able to fix it by unchecking Obtain Topology Automatically under Policy in the settings of the shrewsoft vpn client and adding my local subnet under remote network resource.
I can ping 8.8.8.8 now but the intrenet traffic is not going thru the tunnel.  :(
