UPS for NUT to turn off pfSense?
-
Hi,
I was wondering what UPS (APC) should i get for pfSense? I see on the NUT options generic but is there a particular model? Because recently been getting power outages and currently have it with another UPS but I would want that the UPS to send a command to turn of pfSense.Thank you

The "generic" models are usually rather old and depend upon serial pin signaling rather than an interactive protocol. If you have USB available, I would choose that over serial.
The best place to start is the NUT HCL list here: http://networkupstools.org/stable-hcl.html.
The current pfSense NUT package does not have all the drivers available, but you can generally work around this by choosing a model that uses the same driver. There is a new pfSense NUT package pending that addresses the driver issues.

Thank you for the reply,
Im looking though amazon and ebay to see what model I think i may have narrowed it down (BACK-UPS XS LCD), as a curious question which UPS do you use for pfSense to shutdown normally?
Thank you

In the past few years, I have used several APC, Tripp Lite, and Cyber Power units. I've had good success with the APC and Tripp Lite units. The Cyber Power units have been a bit marginal, although very good for testing the pfSense NUT widget because the estimated runtime changes wildly every minute or so. :)

Thanks for the reply, I will post back when i got NUT working with the appropriate APC for it to turn off pfSense when the lights go out :)
