      I took option 13, Update from console, because online updates are timing out. I am upgrading from 2.3.1 to 2.3.1_5, but there was no reboot involved.

      Here is the output.

              If you look in /conf/upgrade.log does it show any more detail?

              What if you run "pfSense-upgrade -d" from a shell (ssh or console)?

              When you run it from the console, is there any delay between that last "Locking package" message and when it exits the upgrade?

              What is your DNS configuration like? There is a known issue where a NanoBSD upgrade could fail if your DNS resolver or forwarder was not listening or accepting queries on 127.0.0.1. We've addressed that on 2.3.2

                When I first ran it, I do not know.

                Just now, when I ran 'pfSense-upgrade -d', I did not see 'Locking pfSense-kernel-pfSense-2.3' appear, but it was there only for 30-90s I think (based on the last time I looked at it).

                It would be nice if the output included its own timestamps.

                What is your DNS configuration like? There is a known issue where a NanoBSD upgrade could fail if your DNS resolver or forwarder was not listening or accepting queries on 127.0.0.1. We've addressed that on 2.3.2

                This box uses DNS elsewhere on the LAN:

                # cat /etc/resolv.conf
                search int.unixathome.org
                nameserver 10.55.0.13
                nameserver 10.55.0.73

                Thank you

                  @jimp:

                  If you look in /conf/upgrade.log does it show any more detail?

                  I just noticed /conf/upgrade_log.txt, dated a few minutes ago (i.e. right after my previous post).

                  The content of the file is the same as the output of 'pfSense-upgrade -d'

                    Do you have both the DNS Resolver and DNS Forwarder disabled then?

                    The reason I ask is is that it sounds like you are hitting https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/6557

                    When it updates NanoBSD the firewall performs a chroot into the second slice which lacks a resolv.conf. By default FreeBSD will query 127.0.0.1 when resolv.conf is missing, so anyone with the DNS Resolver or Forwarder enabled and bound to * (or a list of interfaces including localhost) won't hit that problem.

                    It's a problem we've made a correction for in 2.3.2, but to get up to 2.3.2 you may have to temporarily enable the DNS Resolver or Forwarder at least for localhost.

                      Neither are enabled, as confirmed by Services / DNS Resolver / General Settings & Services / DNS Forwarder.

                      I think you're saying this will work if I enable DNS Forwarder on localhost.  I will try that later today.

                        Yes that's correct. You can simply enable the DNS forwarder with no other changes, or select at least Localhost in its interface list and that should allow it to get out. Once the upgrade completes you may then disable it. You should not need to do that again once you're on 2.3.2.

                          as they require additional dependencies. They are available as:

                          Message from perl5-5.20.3_12:
                          The /usr/bin/perl symlink has been removed starting with Perl 5.20.
                          For shebangs, you should either use:

                          #!/usr/local/bin/perl

                          or

                          #!/usr/bin/env perl

                          The first one will only work if you have a /usr/local/bin/perl,
                          the second will work as long as perl is in PATH.
                          Message from smartmontools-6.4_2:
                          smartmontools has been installed

                          To check the status of drives, use the following:

                          	/usr/local/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/ad0	for first ATA/SATA drive
                          	/usr/local/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/da0	for first SCSI drive
                          	/usr/local/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/ada0	for first SATA drive

                          To include drive health information in your daily status reports,
                          add a line like the following to /etc/periodic.conf:
                          	daily_status_smart_devices="/dev/ad0 /dev/da0"
                          substituting the appropriate device names for your SMART-capable disks.

                          To enable drive monitoring, you can use /usr/local/sbin/smartd.
                          A sample configuration file has been installed as
                          /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf.sample
                          Copy this file to /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf and edit appropriately

                          To have smartd start at boot
                          	echo 'smartd_enable="YES"' >> /etc/rc.conf

                            Great!

                            2.3.2 should be out on Monday if all goes well with our testing, you will likely have to repeat the procedure again to reach 2.3.2, but after that point you should be OK since the bug is fixed in 2.3.2.
