"Hotswap" USB Cell Modem?
-
I have a setup with I would like to periodically plug in a USB cell modem for additional bandwidth. However, if the USB modem is removed, and the system rebooted, none of the interfaces come up and I need to reconfigure via the console.
From what I have read, there are security issues with the undefined network interface, so you need to go back through a full reconfig via the console.
I am just wondering if there is any way to set this up so that the cell modem can be plugged in/pulled out, and added to for load balencing as needed.
Admins, if this is the wrong forum, please move. I apologize if I have missed something. I have been reviewing forum posts for a few days and not found a solution.
Thank you!

This thread seems to discuss this behavior, but I am hoping there is some way around it

It looks like this question has been pretty much definitively answered in the thread you already found.
As far as I know nothing has changed in this regard since then. Interfaces are assigned a place in the configuration. Changes to what is where triggers an interface reassignment procedure on startup.

Thanks.
Yes. Purchased a support ticket and was told to purchase a cell modem that used ethernet rather than usb. I was trying to migrate from a peplink multi-wan router. I guess I could use it as a front end to the pfSense box if I want to continue down this path.
Thank you.
