Another Hardware Help Thread
-
As the title says, this is another thread for help with hardware selection. I'm admittedly terrible with this, so any help is appreciated.
I have a 300Mb connection that supports 5 people in my mouse, which includes laptops, tablets, Playstation, Netflix streaming, etc. Im in the process of setting up my network so that I have separate networks for network services (domain, monitoring, share, etc), users, and a lab. Once this is set up I plan to connect into a friend's VPN cloud and also have users connect in to my network via VPN as well. The ability to set up Snort, and other packages (not sure what else there is just yet) would also be good.
I can't imagine the VPN connectivity will require more than 100Mb for all users, and I know I don't touch my 300Mb limit. I want to ensure there is some future proofing in my choice, and I also want it to be as efficient (energy wise) as possible for the performance. Suggestions on what to get for this? My basic setup is below, DMZ may or may not be used for now:
Internet / Modem -> pfsense -> DMZ
|
L2.5 / L3 Switch or Router
| | |
Services Users / WiFi LabHopefully that makes sense, thanks again for any help.

So this is what I spec'd out for the box based on a lot of reading on this site. It's a bit more than I was hoping to spend, but maybe it'll last me for a quite a while. Definitely let me know if this build will work with current version of pfSense, because like I said I'm not a hardware guy:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FTG6H34/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=APC13YWKOQWFTotal off Amazon is about $433, and I have the 2.5" SATA drive for the system at home.
The alternative I was thinking about is this Jetway with a D525

Looks good if you can still get hold of a DQ77KB, they are in very short supply.
The D525 will not push more than ~50Mbps VPN traffic and that's without any other packages running.
You may not actually need an i3 the low power Celerons would probably handle that traffic no problem.Steve

Thanks for the reply Steve. I found that board on Amazon, so assuming they don't sell out before I buy I should be good.
I was looking at the Jetway system for more cost effectiveness, but the extra $100 or so may be worth it for future proofing.

For about $80 dollars cheaper, you can get:

The HyperX 4 GB Kit euphoricaries linked is normal DDR3 RAM.
Please make sure you buy SODIMM like the one vg8open linked or it will not fit the Intel DQ77KB board.
