Looks like this may soon make it into FreeBSD so maybe we may see it soon in pfSense!

I don't think dummynet applies to the normal interface traffic shaping, but I think it does apply to the limiters. So the question would be if the limiters will have an option.

Yeah… the majority of us use "traffic-shaping queues" (ALTQ) so I wonder how useful fq_codel will be in "traffic-shaping limiters" (ipfw/dummynet).

Check out the README (http://caia.swin.edu.au/freebsd/aqm/patches/README-0.2.1.txt) for this project for some insight into what is capable with ipfw.

think altq would need to support it or be patched

and I wonder if that is a good idea considering that OpenBSD (the origin of pf) has already removed ALTQ from pf. I dunno if FreeBSD/pfSense is going to adopt the newer pf or stick with ALTQ.

Even without using ALTQ, we could just use limiters with fq_codel for a "set it and forget it" AQM config with fair queuing and AQM (sort of like sqmscripts for OpenWRT/LEDE). Sure, this wouldn't be for everyone, but I can see it as being quite valuable for many folks.
