Buying a pfS box any advice
-
Hi there I could use some help on choosing a pfS box for home use with pfBlockerNG maybe Snort. I would like it to be a bit future proof (so AES would be nice) and I prefer 2 Intel NICs. The price I am hoping for is around 100-200€. Thanks for any help!

Thanks I can't seem to enlarge it enough, but is there a IDE port to connect a SSD drive IDE 40PIN DOM (I have a Kingston 32gb IDE 40PIN DOM http://www.kingspec.com/products_detail/&productId=34.html) I hate to waste it or would you advise a mSATA?

Hi,
there is no IDE connector, the specs are there http://pcengines.ch/apu2c4.htm.
I use mSata on my boxes, no wires or cable, power and mechanical fastening are done with just a click.-teddy

Waiting for the board to be delivered, I would like your advise on which file to install. I thought about the pfSense-CE-memstick-2.3.2-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz as I also bought a mSSD. Second would you know a good installation guide for the PC Engines APU2C4 with SSD 16GB m-sata MLC haven't worked with a console install for some time and last but not least can I use an "all" config file from a i386 installation to restore my current setup, after I installed pfSense to the APU2C4?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,
i used pfSense-CE-memstick-serial-2.3.1-RELEASE-amd64.img to install without problems on my APU.
I prefer serial2Com Adapter with FTDI chipset http://www.digitus.info/sv/produkter/zubehoer/adapter-und-konverter/r-usb-seriell-adapter-usb-20-da-70156/ and a female / female RS232 gender changer.
Your configuration needs a little editing, the name of the interface you have to change to igb0 and igb1 for the APU2
Install:
Unpack and write image to usb-stick
Connect comports and start a terminal program with settings 115200 8N1
plug your usb stick an power up the APU and follow the instructions-teddy

Thanks for your advise!
What's the difference between the pfSense-CE-memstick-2.3.2-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz and pfSense-CE-memstick-serial-2.3.2-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz is it that the serial version outputs to serial port? The serial is a full install, I have my share with the nano as they don't create a crash report.

I assembled the APU2C4 with SSD 16GB in the Black metal case, I don't understand why they have chosen to have 3 NIC's instead of 2 on this board, is this maybe because of the basic setup on IPFire? Second I installed pfSense-CE-memstick-serial-2.3.2-RELEASE-amd64.img. I got a bit confused at the point of choosing a custom kernel configuration. I could choose between <standard kernel="">and <embedded kernel="" (no="" vga="" console,="" keyboard)="">, I choose the embedded kernel, was it the right choice?
I did not expect this Q, as I was installing the serial version as serial would already suggest that there is no keyboard or vga, can you explain this to me or should I have chosen the standard kernel? After this I edited (simple find and replace) my previous config file by changing em0 to igb0 and em1 to igb1. Everything is up and running now ;) . What about bios updates, would you advise to do these or when it installs and runs stay away from them?
And are there specific settings in the pfS that I have to set (cause I restored a pfS config from an ATX board). So like are there thermal sensors and so on??
Thanks for your help and time,
Cheers Qinn</embedded></standard>
