      Hello, here's the image which I hope will explain it.

      Image is only showing an image icon from my end, so I hope you can see the image? I added a shared cloud photo link.

      The purpose is that the wall has 1 Ethernet port, and there is one main computer, but sometimes a laptop is also in the room and needs an Ethernet connection. Both machines are rarely on together, but the ease of use without plugging/unplugging cable is the main benefit.
      However the main computer1 has no Internet ever, when the laptop computer2 has the long (5 metres?) Ethernet cable also connected.

        Use a $5 5-port switch and forget about the Y-adaptor.
        It only works with Y-adaptors on both ends anyway and was supposed to be used for POTS phones on CAT5 cables only.

            Okay, thanks. I found a 4 port manual Ethernet switch for $13. Cheapest I could find.

                What the hell is a "manual Ethernet switch"?
                Get a switch like this: https://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-5-Port-Ethernet-Desktop-TL-SF1005D/dp/B000FNFSPY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1471856483&sr=8-2&keywords=5port+ethernet+switch

                  No idea what a manual ethernet switch is either.. The link jahonix pointed to would be fine if all you want is 10/100 but who runs that anymore?

                  Get a gig one.. Here is major brand d-link 5 port gig for under $15
                  https://www.amazon.com/D-Link-5-Port-Unmanaged-Gigabit-GO-SW-5G/dp/B008PC1FYK

                  So 5 more than the 10/100 one..

                        @johnpoz:

                        … 10/100 ...

                        These Y-Adaptors use two of the 4 pairs in a CAT5 cable for each jack. This gives a maximum of 100Mb per host and that's why I linked such a switch. That's all.

                        This is probably such an adaptor:

                        and that's how it's wired:
