Is pfSense moving to ZFS or is this just an experiment?

ZFS is sure nice but it ups the hardware requirements considerably. I do hope that it stays optional.

We (finally) moved from bsdinstaller to the (all but) stock installer for FreeBSD.  Getting ZFS is a side-effect.  UFS is also an option.

As above, ZFS is a side-effect of fixing a long-standing issue.  Someone who shall remain nameless stuck the project with a foreign installer, and it's taken some time to unwind and correct that mistake.  ZFS isn't mandatory, but it will run fine in 2GB ram on an 8GB flash device.

You should probably get used to the hardware requirements both climbing and lowering.  Climbing because I'm not going to hold back pfSense because of some perceived need to run everything on a 32-bit CPU (that Intel / MAD haven't made for years) with 1GB of RAM.

                    Lowering because ARM.

We invest tens of thousands of man hours every year developing pfSense.  Do you remember the complaints about how pfSense was always lagging the FreeBSD releases (by a lot)?  Did you notice that we're running FreeBSD 11-ALPHA5 here?

That sounds like a good move, I'm looking forward to it.

And I agree, there's no sense in holding back development to support ancient hardware (says the guy who just recently ditched his P4 pfsense rig)  :)

                        Wow that's nice!

Can't wait to run pfsense on a mirrored ZFS :D

Thanks for all your efforts! :D

Yes I remember.  I was one of the complainers.  Thank you for picking up the pace.
