Newbie - First Build
-
Hi all !!!
I am about to put together my first build for this and install for the first time too. The hardware is:
Intel Core i3 2100 @ 3.10GHz ( Sandy Bridge ) , No AES instruction set built in
2 x 4GB DDR3
Asus P8h61-M
500GB HDD
HP NC460T PCI-E Dual Port Gigabit NICNetwork Setup:
I will have my EE Bright Box 2 connected via VDSL, connected to above PFSense box, then to my networkAt most 1 device at a time will connect via VPN and that will be hardly ever as Plex is accessible with no need for vpn.
I stream a lot of Blu-ray films via Plex media server to my Apple TV 4th Gen 9 Cabled in ) and to my ipad/mobile phone over 4G or local Wifi.
Questions….
-
Will the throughput locally be ok or will it be throttled by specs/firewall etc ?
-
Will the throughput be ok over VPN ?
-
Is this total overkill
Think that's it, please feel free to educate me !
Thanks,

Local LAN traffic will never hit pfSense so this is moot.

That depends. Should be fine unless you have a crappy Internet connection. Try it and see.
- Is this total overkill
Yes, but that isn't relevant. If it does the job you want and you can handle the noise + power consumption then it's fine.

Hi again,
Might also be worth pointing out as I see some people mention how many devices are connected when asked throughput or overkill questions so here is whats on my network:
1 x PS3 ( not upgraded to PS4 ) - Ethernet Connection
1 x Onkyo 646 AV receiver - Ethernet Connection
1 x Apple TV 4 - Ethernet Connection
1 x Apple TV 3 - Ethernet Connection
2 x Raspberry Pi's - Ethernet Connection
1 x Philips Hue Lighting 9 Albeit 6 bulbs in total - Hub connected by Ethernet
1 x Owl Intuition Heating system - Ethernet Connection
1 x Plex Media Server (i5,8GB RAM, streams Bu-ray etc) -Ethernet Connection
3 x Smart TV's, 2 of which connected via Ethernet connection
3 x iPads - Wireless Connection
2 x Mobile phones - Wireless Connection
1 x iMac - Wireless Connection
1 x Laptop - Wireless/Ethernet Connection
2 x Wireless AC Access Points - Ethernet ConnectedThink that's it.
Thanks.

I'm not familiar with that particular VDSL box. Can it be put into bridge mode? Ideally that's what you want. But be aware that if it is in bridge mode (acting as a modem only) you will require an additional wireless access point on your LAN. So pfSense takes over the routing/firewalling and the access point takes over providing wireless LAN access.
