First pfSense Build
-
Hi there I'm going to be building my first pfsense router and just wondering if this build will be good for my requirements. Thanks
1Gbit Throughput for future needs (150/150 Currently)
150/150 OpenVpn ThroughputMB: Gigabyte GA-H170N-WIFI
CPU: Intel Pentium G4400
RAM: Kingston Hyperx 2x 4GB DDR4 2133
Case: Antec Isk 110 w/ 90W PSU
SSD: Adata SP550 120GB Sata 3 -
As far as the OpenVPN connectivity, you can take a look here:
https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=115673.0Due the specifications of that CPU I would expect a speeds of 250Mbps at least.
RAM is more than enough, with the same amount on my firewall are running snort (with many rules) pfBlocker, squid, squidGuard and a pair of OpenVPN client, and its usage is less than 25% -
Don't expect to be able to use the wireless on that board with pfSense. Otherwise looks good. As your WAN speed increases and therefore OpenVPN throughput requirements increase, you might want to drop in a CPU with more cores and/or threads to help take advantage of multiple simultaneous connections, but that's far off. Who knows, by then OpenVPN might even be multithreaded. Enjoy your build.

Yes I know I won't be able to use the wifi, I just picked that board because its the cheapest mini itx with dual intel nics.
Thanks for your help

Just wanted to update the thread and say I changed my build to something more compact. Please let me know if you think it will work fine for my needs. Thanks again

hum!
that looks promising. I also wonder if works well with pfsense.

Samsung 850 Evo M.2 250GBLooks promising, but you're going heavy on the RAM and SSD space. Neither will hurt, but expect the vast majority of it to be unused and therefore wasted. I wager you'll find it difficult to use even 2GB of RAM or 30GB of SSD space, if you can even find modules that small. A compromise would be one 4GB module of RAM and the smallest SSD you can find that suits your needs. The i5 6200U should be great for your OpenVPN needs.

ZOTAC ZBOX nano CI323 - Celeron N3150 1.6 GHz
Has AES-NI but no Intel Gb NICIt is cheaper though :P

That system wouldn't be powerful enough for my requirements listed on the first post and I heard realtek nics are really not recommend for pfsense.

Samsung 850 Evo M.2 250GBHere you can take a look on a review of similar miniPC with Intel i5 5200 and two Realtek Nics, its performance are really good… so I expect something better from your Gigabyte Brix.
