    eyeing off an up-board.

they run an intel atom but only have 1 nic…  is it inadvisable to use a usb3 nic interface?

    thanks

Vm's are generally OK (if you pick a well suited hypervisor)

USB NICs are almost always crappy with buggy drivers.

using an vmware esxi 4.1 box.

server is to old to run a more recent version.

i would still have thought a dedicated firewall box was better then a vm

VM is much easier to manage.  If you're a keener, match a VM with a physical unit in a HA arrangement.
