What to do with 32GB of RAM?
-
I got an old Lenovo D10 workstation for free that I just installed pfsense on. It has two Xeon E5430 4 core 2.66 GHz CPUs, 32GB of DDR2 ECC RAM and an old 256GB SSD that I pulled out of a computer that caught fire. I am using it as the router on my home network with a 100 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up contention. Currently it is not even using a GB of ram, so I was wondering if there was anything I could run on it that would use some of the extra ram to improve the network in some way? Thanks in advance for any help :).

I would install ESXi on that machine and run some VM's on it. Then install PFSense on it as a VM and give it around 8gb of ram or so depending on if you plan on using snort and or squid or something of the sort.

Also connect it to a radiator that is hooked up to the central heating system of your skyscraper

So there is nothing in PFSense that will use up a good amount of resources. Ok thanks. I will look into ESXi and into what VMs could be useful on this computer.

Lol there is no way a little D10 could heat my skyscraper. I only use the finest Cuban cigars for that.

Well if you insist you could create a massive squid RAM cache, but it wouldn't really do you much good.

Not sure if it matters to you but those Socket 771 machine use an INSANE amount of power. My old Dell Precision 690 would use upwards of 300 Watts just sitting idle. Each memory stick uses around 15 watts each and putts of a LOT of heat.

I know. This thing comes with a 1000W PSU from the factory :o. The computer is in a basement that is always cool even the dead of summer, so heat is no issue. I got everything in the computer for free so I can't complain about any the draw backs of using a nearly 10 year old computer.

- high up the mbuf size to 1000000
- high up the Squid RAM size
- more RAM disks or for caching
Using Squid, Snort, pfBlocker-NG and VPN will be fine with that amount of RAM
the first thing I would realize is the mbuf size increasing.
