Interested in pfsense
-
Hey All,
I been interested in pfsense for a while and just hadn't pull the trigger yet. I like to secure my home network more and been wanting to purchase at least a SG-2440 since my connection currently is 300/50 and upgrading to 1Gbps since AT&T already laid down fiber in my area. I just been wondering is SG-2220 be enough for my home use. I have about 20 devices on the network most of the time if the family is home. I currently run on a Asus RT-AC5300 as the wireless router and Asus RT-AC2400 as a media bridge. Assuming, if I get the SG-2220 could I chain a printer off it? I have heard it not possible since I chain it off the asus router so that the printer can be wifi capable, but I guess I can move the printer to the media bridge in the living room.
Current setup:
Modem –> Asus RT-AC5300--> Printer
Media bridge Asus RT-AC2400
Thanks a head of time for response.

Hi U3,
How are you connecting the printer? If it's connected via USB directly to the Asus then pfSense cannot replicate that. There is no print/file server functionality included as it's intended as a dedicated firewall/router.
The SG-2220 or SG-2440 will be sufficient for your 300/50 connection but you should consider the SG-4860 if you're likely to be getting a 1Gbps connection any time soon.

Hey Stephen,
I appreciate the response. No, I connect the printer via RJ45. Will SG-2220 still be sufficient if I run these snort+squid+lightsquid+squidguard+darkstat+PFBLOCKER+ maybe country block or should SG-2440 be better because of more RAM and drive space?
Thanks,

I have decided to go with SG-4860 per what Stephen has suggested. Hopefully once it come I may have a few question but I am sure you guys will help me out lol. Hopefully, buying pfsense equipment will help the community out.
Thanks,
