Is there any chance/ would it be okay to install a desktop environment on the backend of my pfsense machine, I know it sounds silly, but I would also like to use the freebsd in a XFCE enviroment as well as SSH and the actual terminal. Would this break my currently working pfsense router haha ? :P

There is no good reason to have a desktop environment on a Firewall which can only be managed through a web browser (excluding some of the small things you can do at the console and over SSH, like set an interface IP).

If you want to use FreeBSD with a window manager then I'd recommend downloading a copy of FreeBSD 10 and firing it up on a extra machine or in a VM.

        I can break anything.

The odds of breaking things are extremely high, and the odds of it working are fairly low.

We might trim things off FreeBSD that the x.org system requires to work. Or it may work if you add binary packages. I wouldn't trust it at all though, and nobody could assist with supporting that since who knows what issues it might cause.

Okay thanks for the help, It was only a proof of concept. Something I thought "What if". I know that adding a desktop environment also adds lots of security issues to servers too.

I have been using xfce4 on my pfsense box since v2.0 with no issues.  Dual atom 1.8ghz with 8GB ram and a 64GB ssd.  Once pfsense boots I ssh into it and startxfce4, which will auto-start synergyc and connect to my windows desktop, so I have a simple X head for stuff like irc, tailing logfiles etc.  I am just now doing a fresh install of pfsense 2.2.1 and setting up xfce on it.  Will report progress in a bit.
