M1n1wall - Flash Support
-
Does an old Netgate m1n1wall support Flash? I want to run snort on it and store the logs there. Any options?
-
They run from a Compact Flash card. You could install a larger one but you'd need to format and mount the additional space to use it for logs. There's not an point and click method for that but it can be done with start-up scripts etc.
There is also an IDE header I believe you could potentially use if you had an externally powered drive.
However that is going to perform poorly with Snort. Snort eats RAM and the m1n1wall (ALIX) has, at most, 256MB.

Don't want to steal the thread…
would you recommend running 2.3.2 on an ALIX board or would you prefer to stick with a less demanding 2.2.6?
The ALIXes I run with 2.2.6 are already slow to a point where making changes to the config needs patience. -
Not a great deal of difference in my opinion. I have one here running 2.3.2_1 and it's a little slow but perfectly usable. I guess it depends how often you make changes or maybe how many widgets you have on the dashboard. I have only the services widget beyond the defaults, and no packages.
You might see some improvement going to 2.3.3 in some areas of the gui where the code has been reworked for greater efficiency. I think the new traffic graphs in 2.3.3/2.4 are likely to tax it though.
A fast CF card is really the biggest difference. Some of the older cards can really crawl when you run an upgrade.

…improvement going to 2.3.3 ...
If/when that will be available other than a snapshot build.

I have concerns about regular usage like adding a static DHCP lease or so. Save or Apply takes some 15+ seconds each on these ALIXes.
Maybe I should try some modern CF cards. Anyone knows of SSDs with a CF interface? -

Better to get a small CF > IDE adapter for less money and then get a small IDE based SSD!
It is cheaper and faster to get this, as that you demanded for in my eyes. -
in this case, ide cf disk or adapter, better using nanoBSD or regular install?

It's effectively beta right now though there aren't yet specific builds. I can't give you any firm dates on that. I would expect it to be after 2.4 is released since all development work is on that currently.
However 2.3.3 is very stable, I haven't seen or heard of any regressions for months. I upgraded my ALIX to it after you asked and that went smoothly, no issue so far.
