Hey I was looking into building my own pfsense system and I have a Gigabyte brix bx is 4770 I was thinking of using but it only has 1 network port. I have thought about possibly doing a vlan, but I have roommates with multiple devices and I'm afraid it might not handle the traffic that well when under heavy load?  I do have a private cloud running as well but it doesn't generate a lot of traffic as of yet.

Hoping to get anyone's thoughts on how to make it work or do the USB nic's/drivers work OK now or if I should just build another separate system? lol

I have 140+mbs average download through Comcast.

      Thanks in advanced!

Much better to use VLANs than a USB NIC.

Good to know! Would there be a significant network performance hit or not be that noticeable? I also have a netgear gs724t4 managed switch (currently just running as a switch/DoSing protection) if that could be of any use to my setup?

Sry, I'm still learning a lot about network firewalls/security so I'm still trying to see the whole picture how it's setup  and how it works lol

There would be a performance hit vs having two Gig NICs, all the traffic has to go over one cable, but it shouldn't have any issue with 140Mbps.

If you setup multiple internal VLANs and have to route traffic between them, potentially at Gigabit line rate, you would likely see the limit.

The GS724Tv4 can certainly be used to create the VLANs you would need to do it.

Awesome ok. We aren't all gunna be pulling in 100mbs each obviously so it should work temporarily at least until I get a little system built. Thanks!
