8 GBit Ethernet System
-
Hello everyone,
i'm looking forward to hear from you suggestions about availability of hardware with 8 gbit ethernet ports/nics.it would be wonderful to have it as a rack mountable appliance.
Do you have any suggestions on mainboards/ethernet nics i can install into rack mountable chassis?
i've looked into DELL.. the r210 is an awesome machine and really affordable, but only a single pci express card can be installed, so i would have a maximum of 6 ethernet nics by adding an intel 4 ports.

I use these with (12) Intel i350 GigE ports and (2) Intel 82599 10Gbe.

They'll work with 2.1 but I'd suggest 2.1.1 since the newer Intel drivers really improve stability.

ooohh.. cool, very nice devices.. thank you very much for the suggestion! :)
do you know how much they charge for these "toys" ? :)

It's reasonable considering what you get. I think mine were about $2400 each for (12) i350, (2) 82599, IPMI, & redundant PSUs. I put another $600 or so into each for CPU, RAM, and SSD.
The FW-7573 with the C2758 CPU (2.1.1 required) is likely a much cheaper alternative and might meet your needs, don't know, you haven't said what you're going to use it for.

Hi Jason,
What problem is there if we use 2.1.5?
thanks

None, you need at least 2.1.1 for the i354 NICs to work correctly.

Yeah the post that mentioned 2.1.1 was back in April when 2.1.1 was the newest available release. Now of course you want 2.1.5, or whatever the newest stable version is at the time you're reading this.
