Import 2.0.3 config backup into 2.1?
-
Hello all,
I'm currently running pfSense v2.0.3 on my production firewall pair, which, hardware-wise is quite old and in need of an upgrade. I purchased two new units from Hacom that include pfSense v2.1 as part of the installation. Am I correct in thinking I can just backup the configurations from my existing pair, change the interface names where appropriate in the backup (old firewalls have a mix of bge and em cards whereas the new ones are all either em or igb), and then import into my new firewalls? In looking over the notes from going from 2.0.3 to 2.1 I did take the precaution of explicitly adding a pfsync-allow rule on my sync interface as mentioned in the Upgrade Guide. Anything else I need to do?
Thanks!

In thinking about this a bit more I will be sure to first install all packages that are already part of my 2.0.3 pair on the 2.1 boxes before I import the backup, to ensure those packages get their configuration as well. I'm not using many, just hapoxy-full, arping, mtr-nox11, OpenVPN client export util, and Zabbix-2 Agent.
Anything else?

You can always restore an older config.xml backup to a newer version of pfSense.
It will reboot after the restore and then during the boot process it will attempt to automatically download and restore the packages for you.

I'm in the same situation. I was wondering if it is best to take a backup of the old PF1 and then restore that to the new PF1 (after modifying the file for the changed interfaces). And then do the same with the old and new PF2 servers.
Is there a preferred way to actually swap out the equipment? I'd love to do this with no downtime and hopefully that should be possible with the CARP failover. But I'm not sure if it makes any difference to swap the Master or Backup units first.
Echoranger, did you successfully make this change? Do you have any hints to offer?
Thanks!
