Namely, it appears the USB chip is POS.

It means it has a reputation for being unreliable. It may even work fine at lower data rates but choke at the 115200 console speed of the APU2. (You are running the console at 115200 8N1?)

              Junk. Garbage. Shit. Crap.

                So it's just the cable… I'm relieved... :)

                Any recommendation for better one?

Do you have a link to a specific product?
preferably a store in the EU…

                    Thanks!

Perhaps from Amazon.de it would be the best to buy this one here, it is not shiny, not nice looking but well working together
with Alix, APU and Jetway boards! A Nullmodem cable and a serial to USB 2.0 adapter, as a bundle. Serial console bundle
~16 Euros It works with pfSense, RotuerOS and MikroTik RBs, IPFire, SmoothWall, mOnOwall and ClearOS out of
                        the box without any problems.

On Windows 7 please install Putty and then on all three sides must be used 115200 8N1, this means on the
pfSense this is the default and it must be set now only at the putty and the BIOS of the APU board, and safe it.

Late to the party but I love this USB/Serial adapter: http://a.co/izusaxl
I've got a couple of them and they've been great to me. Plus, blinkenlights.

That, along a null modem cable (or straight serial + null modem adapter). Be sure you have the correct connector gender on both ends.

Why not just get the cable direct from PC Engines that's made for it?
