      First time pfSense user…

Having unsuccessfully searched the this forum for clues to my problems, I am posting this question...

I have installed pfSense 2.3.2 but am unable to configure the network interfaces, WAN, LAN, and Option1 to their resective NICs (em0, em1, etc).  After install the physical port to logical name for the WAN mapping is set to "em0" with the IP address blank;  LAN is set to em1 with the default IP address.  Assign Interfaces (option 1 on the console) fails when using auto-detect with the message "No link-up detected." regardless of the NIC i plug the WAN cable.  (The WAN cable is active as I can connect directly from the cable modem to a computer, gaining access to the internet.)  I am out of ideas to troubleshoot.

Please, any ideas from more experienced pfSense users/experts?

I am running pfSense on a Supermicro X9SCL-F motherboard with two on board Intel NICs and a PCIe Intel NIC with two ports.  pfSense does recoginize all four ports -- em0 through em1.

      Thank you...

        Use Auto Detect option.

Unplug all Ethernet cables except IPMI NIC.
        Reboot.
Select Option 1 to assign interface(s).
        Setup VLANs (n)
        Assign WAN to em0…em3
        Type 'a'
        Plug appropriate Ethernet cable
Wait until either NIC LED are visible or "em0...em3 link is UP" message
        Enter
        Repeat

Do not be afraid to fail.

          Thank you Blade Runner….

I am able to configure the WAN, Lan, and Option 1 ports by selecting the port name, em0, em1, or em2 for the appropriate network (WAN, LAN...).  Using the "auto select" method failed each and every time.  EIther the function within pfSense is 'flaky' or the two MBs I tested with do not work with the "auto select" feature.

            Questions…

IPMI has Ethernet cable plugged into switch?
            Reset (cable) modem?
            Can you post screenshots?

I haven't had any issues with Auto-detect. No issues with Supermicro M/B until X10SLL-S and C2758.

Do not be afraid to fail.
