BT Infinity 2 (again!)

Hi,
I've been using pfSense fine with a current ISP over PPPoE. I've just had BT Infinity 2 installed and am at a loss as to why I cant get a WAN connection (or even if it's possible with my hardware).

I run pfSense on a SG-1000.

Current setup:
ISP (microwave internet via PPPoE) -> SG-1000 (WAN port) -> LAN

This works fine no problem.

BT have supplied a BT Smart Hub  (not so smart!). This connects directly into the BT Master socket via RJ11 (the master socket has a VDSL filter plate on the front of it). There is NO seperate Openreach VDSL modem

Is it possible to setup pfSense to plug into one of the LAN ports on the Smart Hub and somehow configure pfSense to work via that? The Smart Hub has DHCP on it (which I can turn off if necessary) and is able to have its IP changed but that seems to be about it for network settings. I'm guessing (rightly or wrongly) that I could leave the Smart Hub as the main connection point and somehow use the WAN connection from my SG-1000 to hook up to it?
I'm also worried if this is the case that I might be double-NAT'ing ??

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated :) I've searched on here for answers but everything I've found so far has been relevant to setups including an Openreach modem which I dont have

You would be double NATing.

IMO you'd be better ditching the HH and getting a Draytek V130 or they're loads of cheap ones on eBay :-

I'm with Zen Internet and was supplied a modem, its really straight forward setting up pfSense PPPoE.

have you got any simple (im a simpleton) instructions on how to setup pfSense for use with an Openreach modem at all? I'm assuming it's a standard PPPoE WAN interface ?

If your quick I spoted one for £0.99, but it looks like it didn't have a power supply, sure you could get something from Maplins.

I just connected the modem to the ADSL line and an ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port, didn't need to touch the modem config wise.

I have IPv6 enabled too.

You can use the DMZ mode on the BT SmartHub to create an internet feed for a pfSense WAN interface. The pfSense WAN interface must be set to use DHCP to the SmartHub instead of PPPoE through it. It also needs to be configured on the SmartHub as the DHCP client to be used as a DMZ host. Newer BT/Plusnet access devices don't have bridge mode which is frustrating. DMZ works but it is not as elegant as PPPoE. You can switch off the WLAN features on most BT/Plusnet devices.

It is probably better to obtain a used Openreach VDSL 'modem' which would let you go back to using PPPoE and the SmartHub can go back in its box and put into the cupboard for connection troubleshooting when needed.

thanks for the help everyone. I've just received my Openreach HG612 (Huawei), plugged it in, set my PPPoE username to bthomehub@btbroadband.com and my password to (randomly) 12345. Plugged it in to WAN port and works straight away!

Wish everything did that!
