I always put in a  good effort to make sure I'm in the correct forum by first reading forum instructions, then reading the kinds of other posts in the forum itself. If I have any doubt, I just start off with "Sorry if I'm in the wrong forum".

They're mostly just lazy and like to externalize the cost of communications. Welcome to the Internet.

I'm not talking about the regulars.  It just seems like every time there is a new user with a problem they invariably post it here, which requires MORE effort than putting it in General Questions.

The less charitable part of my tiny brain isn't surprised that people who can't figure out which forum to post in are having problems.  Attention to detail is kind of a prereq when working with technology.

Tell that to someone who doesn't know that he doesn't know. Even worth if he thinks he knows…  ;)

If you are new to pfSense and networking the amount of information in this forum is overwhelming.
They read the topics top down and don't know where their specific question fits. After scrolling past IPv6, IPsec, PPTP, SNMP and OpenVNP, terms they have absolutely no clue about, they see: General Category: General Discussion
          Relief is near.

I'm a programmer by trade. My co-worker has asked if I'm even human, that my attention to detail is unreal. I don't interface with people very well, but I do with computers.

It's called Dunning–Kruger effect and is mostly a result of a lack of metacognition which is caused by low fluid intelligence. But not to say low intelligence. Fluid intelligence is vital to strong technical abilities, it gives rise to inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, and logical pattern recognition. Even the definition is pretty strait forward "Fluid intelligence or fluid reasoning is the capacity to reason and solve novel problems, independent of any knowledge from the past"

"Can someone explain to me the thinking of people that come here for help, deliberately scroll past all of the the actual specific support forums and end up posting their issue here in General Discussion? "

Users/People in general are idiots would be the simple straight to the point… Not sure why anyone would try to make excuses for the moronic things people do..

Why do people post in anything other than english in an english forum, when clearly a section in their language..  That is the one that drives me nuts ;)  Other than spambots, etc..

Do you not go out into the world??  Is really sad to be honest.. The quote from Carlin comes to mind..

And today we have a new post asking for support in General Discussion.  How did he not see this topic at the very top, complaining about people posting their support issues here???  My brain, it hurts…

I'm an optimist and think that most people are intelligent in their own way, but technical problem solving is highly affected by different forms of intelligence.

Example 1) Some people have great social skills, but that's it. They are intelligent when it comes to interacting with people. I cannot fathom this, it's well beyond my ability
Example 2) Some people have incredible memory. They can remember all kinds of details that would take me large amounts of time to re-find if I so desired.
Example 3) Some people have strong technical skills and are horrible at #1 and #2

Hmm… I can't say it bothers me. In the grand scheme of things, I can understand that the intracacies of forum-life take time to learn. I mean, when my kid is screaming in the other room, how important does the choice of which sub-forum to post in rank? At least I chose the right forum... (I have no kids)

I'm most bothered by newbies who don't read shit then blame everyone else for their own fuckups.

"I haven't read anything about [topic] and I can't get it to work. The pfSense devs are morons who make a shitty product."

Please correct any obvious misinformation in my posts.

Speaking from personal experience with this site, the barrier to entry is extremely high. Self discovery is lacking, the search function is marginal and there does not seem to be any welcoming, here is how to get started greeting, when you sign up as a new member.

That and the constent barge of "what hardware do I need" masks the information that is of value.

                            Opinions mine.

People are trying to do what used to take a room full of PhDs and grad students to accomplish.

                            This stuff is complicated.

These days everyone wants to policy route this traffic and that out a VPN or two on a set schedule while containing DNS leaks with pretty much no knowledge of simple things like you can't have the same subnet on two interfaces. Then when you tell them that can't be done they argue "but it worked on product X." They want a turnkey product but don't want to renumber. That and they have to have IPsec working to their workplace and the IT department there is of less-than-zero assistance.

Sort of akin to rebuilding an automobile transmission - but the same people who would never attempt that because they don't have the knowledge, experience, or tools, somehow think that building a complicated IP network that functions well is somehow within the grasp of anyone and everyone. I do not understand that phenomena.

They won't even pay $25 for the book.

                            It's pretty ludicrous.
