      Try doing an upgrade of just pkg itself first: pkg upgrade pkg

        The lack of ability to produce a usable package manager in FreeBSD is simply amazing. How about switching to .deb, .rpm or something similar that's been working for ages? I mean, I've never had issues with inability to downgrade a package, inability to upgrade itself, complete failure to work offline or any similar issues that are absolutely ridiculous in 2017.

          It's odd though we can never seem to replicate these random weird behaviors here, usually it's something unexpected like an upstream proxy, something messing with DNS replies so it can't lookup an SRV response, or other connectivity issues.

          It's better now than it's ever been in the past and it keeps improving though. I doubt any other packaging system would be any better on FreeBSD at the moment since it would need to integrate into the ports tree and whatnot. It would be a ton of work for minimal benefit. Easier to fix the problems found in pkg directly.

            When I run upgrade from console and see the idiotic thing download the pkg metadata twice in ~10 seconds, I wonder WTF would design a clusterfuck like that.

            Absurd.

              [2017-02-17 Command summary added]
              Command summary from second pfSense upgrade:
              pkg upgrade pkg
              pkg clean
              pkg update
              pfSense-upgrade -d
              Any of the upgrade or update commands above may fail.  Just "up-arrow' and retry more than once if needed.  'pkg' seems to have a really short server timeout.  When it expires, the result is a misleading file "Not found" error instead of "Server timeout or too busy.  Please try again later."

              @jimp:

              Try doing an upgrade of just pkg itself first: pkg upgrade pkg

              SUCCESS!!!

              It required more than just 'pkg upgrade pkg'.  My terminal session follows.
              I'm going to try upgrading my other pfSense installations now.

              Thanks jimp.

              The /usr/bin/perl symlink has been removed starting with Perl 5.20.
              For shebangs, you should either use:

              #!/usr/local/bin/perl

              or

              #!/usr/bin/env perl

              The first one will only work if you have a /usr/local/bin/perl,
              the second will work as long as perl is in PATH.

              This package installs symlinks to support root certificates discovery by

              If you prefer to do this manually, replace the following symlinks with

              smartmontools has been installed

              To check the status of drives, use the following:

              /usr/local/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/ad0 for first ATA/SATA drive
              /usr/local/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/da0 for first SCSI drive
              /usr/local/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/ada0 for first SATA drive

              To include drive health information in your daily status reports,
              add a line like the following to /etc/periodic.conf:
              daily_status_smart_devices="/dev/ad0 /dev/da0"
              substituting the appropriate device names for your SMART-capable disks.

              To enable drive monitoring, you can use /usr/local/sbin/smartd.
              A sample configuration file has been installed as
              /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf.sample
              Copy this file to /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf and edit appropriately

              To have smartd start at boot
              echo 'smartd_enable="YES"' >> /etc/rc.conf

              Message from nginx-1.10.1,2:

              Recent version of the NGINX introduces dynamic modules support.  In
              FreeBSD ports tree this feature was enabled by default with the DSO
              knob.  Several vendor's and third-party modules have been converted
              to dynamic modules.  Unset the DSO knob builds an NGINX without
              dynamic modules support.

              To load a module at runtime, include the new `load_module'
              directive in the main context, specifying the path to the shared
              object file for the module, enclosed in quotation marks.  When you
              reload the configuration or restart NGINX, the module is loaded in.
              It is possible to specify a path relative to the source directory,
              or a full path, please see
              https://www.nginx.com/blog/dynamic-modules-nginx-1-9-11/ and
              http://nginx.org/en/docs/ngx_core_module.html#load_module for
              details.

              Default path for the NGINX dynamic modules is

              /usr/local/libexec/nginx.

                pkg officially confirmed to be the next generation of POS package managers for FreeBSD. Sigh…

                  PKG has its problems but it's still thousand time better than the terrible mess we had before it.

                    PBI was crap by design due to the braindead "self-contained" packages idea… So, after couple of years have been wasted, they come out with a "next generation" tool that's unable to handle even minor version upgrades without getting pushed manually ~10 times?

                    Sorry, this feels like 90s, configure, make, make install.  Incredibly disappointing.  :-\  :(

                      Except it does handle it very well for nearly everyone.

                      These sorts of problems are few and far between. We update tons of firewalls all the time internally and for customers and rarely have any problems that are not related to connectivity.

                      A couple bad examples doesn't make the whole thing worthless.

                        Yeah PBI… I was actually referring to the old FreeBSD packaging tools, pkg_add and friends. Those were terrible at best and you had to resort to /var/db/pkg surgery constantly to fix your package database because the DATABASE didn't know about a simple concept of internal consistency.

                            I also encountered this error, but in my case there was a circular link causing it:

                            ls -alFh /root/var/cache/
                            total 4

                            drwxr-xr-x  4 root  wheel  512B Apr 12  2016 ../
