      Hi everybody !

I'm building a pfsense firewall for a small business network, I'm gonna have WAN, LAN, WIFI and Guest.

the pfsense is gonna be connected to the internet and to a NETGEAR ProSAFE JGS524PE 24-Port.

my idea is to separate in three different VLANS the LAN, WIFI and Guest. now my question is, do i need to use an Ethernet board that allows VLAN tagging? Or can I use a "normal" Ethernet card?

I want WIFI and Guest go through the same interface (LAN is gonna be in a different one) and have DHCP runnig for each WIFI and Guest.

I'm also will be using this Access point: EnGenius EAP1200H (allows VLAN Tagging)

Thanks so much for your time!

Pretty much any Ethernet card will allow VLANs. You want one that support hardware VLAN tagging to get the full frame size inside that but that's almost all available NICs too.

If you're chosing one specifically try to get some thing with an Intel chipset.

I do not recall ever seeing even the cheapest of the cheapest nics not supporting vlans in hardware..

Someone will have made one…. and someone else will have tried to use it!

              USB1 probably.  ;)

You are prob right - and usb prob likely where that might happen.  But when he says card, I don't think about usb adapters..
