D510 Atom Through put

I recently upgraded my internet to 300mb DOWN / 30mb UP. I was curious what my old D510 would do. The build:

Intel D510MO Motherboard
Intel Atom D510 processor (2 x 1.66)
4gb RAM
Intel PRO/1000 MT Dual Port NIC
Intel 40gb SSD
pfSense 2.3.3 64 bit

Results:
334.59MB DOWN / 33.29MB UP

I didn't see the CPU go above 33%
Memory 6%
Disk 3%

Note: I have been running this thing for years. Heat and noise were the driver behind the original build. I bought it due to the fanless proc. I orignially had a 10gb SSD and upgraded to the intel 40gb a coulple of years ago on a black Friday deal. I was using the onboard realtek 100mb and a single port 100mb intel originally. I updated the BIOS 2 levels, added the PRO1000 and disabled the onboard realtek. The BIOS level I was at didn't recognize the NIC.

I scoured the internet to see what through put this proc would do… no one had any clue over 100mb that I could find. I am guessing it would do 500-600mb easily. Hope this helps someone.

If you use the onboard Realtek 1000Mbps and one of the 2 ports of the Intel Pro/1000 ,
you can normmaly reach to 550Mbps.
The throughput between the 2 ports of the Intel Pro/1000 is lower, because both datastreams
runs over the same systembus (PCI slot).
If you use the onboard port, and one of the 2 ports of the Intel Pro/1000 , then each datastream
have its own systembus, therefor a higher troughput.

I build Thin Clients with a 1.2Ghz single core cpu, 2Gb Ram and a Intel Pro/1000 Dual Port Nic,
and reach 550Mbps without no problem when connected like above.

This is good news, because we're using a similar system (Jetway mobo, D525 Atom CPU), and The Phone Co. just brought 1Gb/s fiber to the neighborhood. :D

You could try out to play around with the PowerD options to let the CPU scaling higher as now.

If enough RAM will be there you could also try out to set a higher mbuf size but please not to high because
you could ending up in a booting loop, pending on the 4 GB RAM only.

If you are must not using PPPoE there, you could be luckily getting nearly 1 GBit/s with that boards then!

I just replaced my firewall with a Qotom. I had an atom D525 and doing a speed test with my Gb fiber the unit would actually have a seizure for a few seconds and drop connectivity. I too never saw it go past 33% but the problem with that is for a D525 that means all cores were pegged and is why connectivity would drop.

It can good be, that the cpu might be strong enough but the entire memory system might be saturated and based on that the
throughout will be screwed down.
