First inst SSD … TRIM yes or no / SWAP yes or no / LOGs yes or no
-
hello there!
i'm running for the first time my new
Supermicro C2758 with 16GB RAM DDR3 ECC 1600mhz
i want to go with a Full Install on my SSD Samsung 850 Pro 256GB (with last firmware) , these days there's no sense to run nanobsd, right? on 2.4 there's gonna be no embedded version, right?
now running live version nanobsd for test, everything is UP, everything looks fine
my questions before full install are:
-
do i have to enable TRIM ? some people has issues/problems with TRIM loosing data or something like that
-
better to go with 0 SWAP ? i read that swap gonna slow down my pfsense, is that true?
-
disable logs to save ssd lifespan ? i don't need to keep logs, but gonna be fine to keep network usage data , maybe i can run schedule backup before shutdown ? running UPS already
another suggestion for first install? something else to enable or disable?
on System-Advanced-Miscellaneous i set like the image
other things?
thanks! and regards from Italy

I would definitely disable SWAP, as it can slow things down, and it will degrade the life expectancy of the SSD considerably.
Disabling the logs would also extend the SSDs life, perhaps setup a remote syslog for them to log into some other server.
I also have a product called PFMonitor which acts as a remote log for pfsense.

i think gonna enable RAMdisk for logs and leases with schedule every 24hours , what size for ram disk /tmp and /var ?
but what about TRIM ?
thanks

Normally TRIM would be yes, but if TRIM support is buggy in pfsense i wont vouch for it without knowing for sure.

This is an overgeneralization. It does work fine once you manage to turn it on for the filesystem used.

the TRIM factor on PFsense is not Clear
some people tells to Enable
and some other people tells that is better to leave TRIM Disable with a 10% or 20% of unused space on the SSD…
confused ::)

TRIM yes or no ?!
