Connecting to BT Infinity

It was odd as it used to work then one day - poof. No more net. I'm not sure how to do what you suggest though. ANy clues?

And we have lift off! I decided to have another go this morning. This time was bright enough to ping from the pfsense box and all good. Reboot everywhere else seems to have sorted the problem. Up and running - magic thanks. Now just to get my fan to slow down instead of blasting out!

Nice. Though I hate that that is sometimes required and doesn't tell you what caused the problem. ::)

Should work fine, I use a similar setup.
They started giving gateways in private IP space a while back. You might have to change the gateway monitor to an external IP if you haven't already.

is this normal for BT to use a private address with an openreach modem, its doing my head in i brought modem
to replace home hub thinking it would work ok with pfsense but the only way i can get the gateway graph to work is

Yes they give me a private address as the upstream gateway. The actual WAN IP should be public though.
Just set the monitoring IP for that gateway as some public IP that responds. It better to monitor something outside the providers network anyway.

thats what i thought would be the case, i have another problem though the same time every morning
my internet goes off and the only way to get it back up is to unplug lan2 on the openreach modem
wait until the DSL light goes solid then plug the lan2 cable back in, this is getting annoying though
as my network is in the attic lol, do you know what this could be or anyone else?Kind Regards

Hmm, not really. LAN2 is not normally used, you have the unlocked firmware? Is it the ECI or Huawei modem?
Does pfSense actually lose Ethernet link with the modem? You should try running ifconfig (interface) down and then back up rather than unplugging it. I assume you cannot just reconnect the PPPoE session?
Do the system logs show anything when it goes down?

its the Huawei modem and its not unlocked, internet is stable now, i might try unlocking modem and using lan1 ?

Ah, I must be mistaking the two LAN ports. One is usually covered and not used. The unlocked firmware allows you to use either (or both) and provides access to the line stats which can be helpful.
One thing I will note is that the cooling on the Huawei HG612 appears to be right on the edge of envelope! If you have it mounted incorrectly or too close to a radiator it might stop passing traffic. I had one replaced and then another one started acting the same way until I repositioned it. Fine ever since.

Have you been able to get ipv6 working properly with infinity. I have ipv6 on sky fttc but setting up another system shortly which will be infinity 2 so hoping pfsense will work with bt's ipv6 requirements?

Yes, sort of.
They use a link local connection for WAN but will hand you a subnet via PD to use on an internal interface. That works fine. Or it did last time I checked.
