Can't flash bios on Watchguard x550e

Hi,
First post on this forum for me.
I bought a Watchguard x550e on eBay for cheap, thinking I would be able to follow the guide for flashing the bios, but it's not happening for me.
The flashing process takes around 10-15 seconds, and when I reboot I find the old bios is still in place.
(I have used biosid, and the info looks as it should)
There are no error messages, but I'm thinking this is maybe because of running it through the serial console.
Would putting a graphics card in help? i.e. to see the error message.
The only card I have is in the machine I am connecting via the serial port from, so I'm thinking I would also need to solder a USB port to the mobo so I could plug a keyboard in.
Any ideas why the flashing process would fail?

What instructions were you following, and did you use the 8.1 BIOS?
