General Newbie Question

All:
Please forgive this newbie question. For I am new to PFSense, FreeBSD and the Linux World… I am a new convert from a die hard Microsoft..... trying to escape assimilation my the evil empire....
Anyway... My question is simple, is PFSense secure by default installation... I mean like out of the box secure... Or do I need to worry about setting up rules, nats and such... I mean I understand default accounts and passwords need to be reset... but are the recommended settings/parameters and rules?
Thanks...
Any help escaping Microsoft Hell is greatly appreciated.....
Alcova....

per default pfSense blocks everything everywhere.
If you have no rules that allow anything, then nothing is allowed.
Out-of-the-box there is 1 rule on the LAN that allows traffic from LAN to WAN.
Also there is always (except you disable it under advanced) an anti lockout rule.
so you dont lock yourself accidentally out. Also you might want to change the webgui from http to https.

Thanks for the info. Will do on the secure socket suggestion…
Every inch taken in a step away from Microsoft is a step closer to IT stability... 8) Thanks again...
