Possible Managed Switch Purchase
-
I was think of getting a netgear managed switch to be able to do VLANs. Will this model work? https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=12K-008X-00022&ignorebbr=1
Can I connect an unmanaged switch to the mannaged switch? Will for example VLAN10 on the managed switch connect other devices to VLAN10 only? I presume I would need all managed switches if I need to have the flexiblity of accessing any of the VLANs. -
I personally despise those low-end netgears. If it was me I would get this. $5 cheaper even:

Yes, you can make an untagged port on any VLAN and connect an unmanaged switch to that. All ports on the unmanaged switch will be on the untagged VLAN of the managed switch port. You must choose one and only one VLAN for this.

I can second Derelict's proposal. Go for the D-Link switch, no matter how much more or less it costs.

For about $60, you can get the zyxel gs1900-8.
Much better than the $30 range smart switches.

To Clarify:
So same managed switch with VLAN10->unmanaged switch won't work to continue to transmit VL10 to other devices connected to the unmanaged switch
VLAN 20 ->different 2nd unmanaged switch won't transmit VL20 to other devices connected to a 2nd unmanaged switch
I would have to replace all my switches with managed ones to propagate the VLANs? -

Only if still tagged (but that wouldn't make sense in your case).
Once a VLAN gets untagged on an outgoing port you can use that VLAN's traffic now untagged everywhere else. Whatever is connected to that port will not know those packets had been tagged before. -
I'm in the same situation and was considering the zyxel gs1900-8. Now I'm thinking about stepping up on level and aim for a 16 port switch. I'm leaning towards the hp 1920 16g. Any other suggestions? I can get the 1920 for around 200$. I value the following:
10-20 ports
Fanless
Low power consumption
Poe is a plus but not a must haveI've also looked at the ubiquity 8p.

Cisco SG300-20
Don't know about retail or used-place prices though.
