Hello, finally got around to building a pfSense box and I bought a 128GB SSD to use with it. When I use df -h it shows that the disk is only 84 GB big, it also shows that on the dashboard. Any idea why it didn't use all of my SSD space and how do I expand it to make it use all of it? Thanks! :D

How much RAM memory? Some of your drive is allocated for swap, which is usually double your RAM. This will not show up using that command.

Try the below command, for ada0 and look for " # mediasize in bytes ". This will show sized of drive that you partition during installation.
        diskinfo -v ada0

Ah so it did use all 128GB, I have 16GB of ram in it so it has 32GB for swap. Can I lower the swap partition to give myself more storage then? Also thanks.

Back up your config and re-install using manual partitioning. You can downsize the swap to 8GBs without any adverse effects, the swap is only used when there is a real need for swap space i.e. the system is very low on free physical RAM.

I see, is reinstalling the only way to do this? I really don't want to mess anything up or have to go and pull it out from under a table and find a 50 foot hdmi cable to connect it to the nearest monitor >.<

Yes, because you're re-partitioning the storage, reinstalling is the only way to do it.

There is growfs that can be used to upsize a filesystem after you have increased the size of the enclosing partition. However the chances of you messing up this procedure (sorry, just based on your apparent level of expertise with UNIX/FreeBSD in general) are much greater than messing up the relatively easy reinstall.

Or keep it the way you have it now. Unless you are doing some type of storage service on pfSense, you will never use up the 128GB. What I recommend for other folks is; get a smaller hard drive, like 16GB or 32GB, heck 8GB will do fine if you are doing basic firewall filter.

As a basic user, using128GB, most of your 100GB disk space is sitting doing nothing.
