      I am already using a ssd but is there a way to speed up boot times. I see a two second pause with a user boot screen. Is there a way to eliminate it?

        Don't reboot so much?  :P

        But you probably can shave some seconds off the loader menu. Try adding the following to loader.conf.local

        autoboot_delay=N

        Where N is 10 (seconds) by default.

          Thanks, I don't reboot too often, but my wife (non-IT) complains when it takes too long for internet connectivity.

            My box takes about 1 minute to restart from the first packet lost. Other things that add to boot time are any devices that prompt for input, like your bios or NIC asking about PXE.

              "complains when it takes too long for internet connectivity."

              And how long is does the reboot take?  While you can trim a few seconds here or there with say the boot delay, and removing the F1 prompt, etc.  In the big scheme of things this isn't going to be a significant reduction.  Your talking a few seconds off what??  I know an upgrade to a new snap takes me a few minutes tops..

              I normally do such things off hours ;)  Ie first thing in the morning before wife gets up.. Or kids could be hitting my plex box remotely, etc.  I could see if you were taking the internet down for hours at a time to tinker.. But couple of minutes on a reboot - 10 seconds isn't going to solve your problem ;)

                I did notice that going from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4, there is a longer wait time to acquire WAN ip from DHCP. Probably about 15sec. Before it was like 2sec. This is the second pfSense router inside the first pfSense firewall (dhcp server). Happens on new install and reboots, it takes the same amount of time to aquire WAN ip.

                  You power down your router for the night?

                    I don't shutdown the system overnight. If the system is rebooted I don't want the wife perceive it is slow.

                      I reboot about once every 2-6 months, depending on the updates. Can you not find a 1-2 minute window sometimes over a few months where she's not using the Internet?

                        I think everybody in thread are interested in answer on question:
                        Do you really need to reboot it, patrick0525?
