Charon.core filling file system
-
I am very new to Pf sense but we currently have an issue with the Pf sense firewall that we have.
When looking into our firewall crashes it is caused by a charon.core file which fills the file system completely which stops it from working correctly. I have seen other users have this issue reading through the forum but I have never seen an explanation on how to fix the issue or why it occurs. Would someone be able to clarify what actually causes this to fill up and is there a permanent fix?
I am using IPSEC which is likely what it is related to the file system issue as i have seen that Charon is a daemon which is used during the installation process of IPSEC could I delete this and would it solve the issue or would it stop the IPSEC from functioning also?
The version of PFSense I am running is 2.2.4 i368
Any help or explanation would be great!

- Get on the latest version. 2.2.4 is long out of date.
- If the hardware supports it, run the 64 bit version.
- Look at the logs for IPSec errors and try to figure out why it's crashing. No one can help you fix it if you don't know why it's crashing.

We are planning on doing an upgrade to the latest version sometime soon and will see if that will solve the issue. Are the pf sense config files forward compatible? I am currently unable to find any errors within the logs but the file system will randomly fill up because of it, I will monitor our logs and see if anything occurs.

Are the pf sense config files forward compatible?
Yeah, you can backup the config, do a clean install of the latest version, and restore the config.

That is great, thanks for the help
