is this possible to do on an embedded system ie on a SD card or do i need to buy a mSATA card to install it on?

Should be possible. See https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=77034.0. Also, note that packages for FreeBSD 8.3 (if you are using pfSense 2.1.*) has been archived now, see https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=78935.0 for solution.
Edit: What stephenw10 said

There is a pfSense nmap package available, no need to access the FreeBSD 8.3 repo at the command line.

Stephen your the man thank you
but can i install it on a nano (RO) version of pfsense or should i buy a mSATA card and install the full version of pfsense?
EDIT: i installed it successfully on my pfsense machine so i answered that question myself and it works fine
