Hi i have 1 raspberry pi 3 running a vpn client (pia) and 1 running a openvpn server with home assistant also installed. My broadband is provided by virgin with speeds upto 270mb.
I have been looking at pfsense for a while, so have decided to join the forum to get some answers please.
I want to build my own router that can handle my broadband, vpn server and a vpn client without slow vpn speeds.
I was looking at getting : amd a6 6400 cpu
any socket fm2 mobo
4 gig ram
intel pci quad nic
microatx or mini itx case + power supplywould my above spec serve my purpose?
My budget is £100 max which i can get all of the above from ebay. Many Thanks

You could do what i did.
Asrock ITX AMD-APU-5000
1U Case (Depending what you like of course)I had some parts laying around, so my build with new case, psu & ram was about 150.
Hope this Helps.

For VPN, make sure the processor you select has a high base frequency. Number of cores won't matter as much as the base frequency. Also, since you are going to buy one, make sure you buy a CPU that supports AES-NI, which would take some load off of the main processor itself and pfSense 2.5 would require AES-NI, so it would be future proof.
I know the A6 6400 does support AES and it's clocked at 3.9GHz, so it would make a good choice for your scenario.

Hi thanks for your reply,s.
The reason I chose the a6 cpu was because it supports aes ni, so thanks again for your feedback. How would you go about configuring the nic ? My thoughts would be to assign 1 Ethernet port as the vpn client and 1 port as normal broadband. Am I over complicating the nic setup ?

Yeah, i went for the APU as mine had AES-NI on Board.
I, myself, have (Currently) WAN & LAN. and a Windows Server box that provides DNS.
But i use OpenVPN With forced NAT/Routing Rules to Tunnel all Traffic through it, been using OVPN like that since 2012.
Hope this Helps you!.
