Using WiFi for ISP Connection
-
I have a cable modem that is connected to a Linksys EA7500 router that feeds my entire house. I have an office upstairs that I want to create a private network in. My question is can I setup pfSense on a machine that has a WiFi card that will grab internet from the Linksys and then a NIC that is used for the LAN?

I would remove the Linksys and use pfsense with separate networks if you like, Do not use wifi card in pfsense box just get a dedicated AP like a unifi you will get much better results

Not sure I understand right
you want to use the wifi card in pfsense as WAN by creating a wireless bridge ?
NO
and if you keep using your router as router you would double NAT

Since my internet comes into my home office downstairs and my Linksys is connected to the cable modem down there I was hoping to use a machine with pfSense to create a separate network in my work office which is upstairs.
So yes instead of plugging internet into the pfSense machine via an Ethernet cable I wanted to use a WiFi card to connect to my home WiFi and then connect my work office machines to a hub that was connected to the LAN port of the pfSense machine.
I assume you are telling me that is not possible with pfSense?

Oh, tripple NAT certainly must rock… Ditto for the "reliable" WiFi on FreeBSD. May I suggest relocating your pfSense box?

But if I relocate the pfSense box how do I connect to it from an office that is upstairs?

The assumption would be Ethernet but I'm guessing your house isn't wired for it. If you have coaxial television outlets in the office and near your router you can use a pair of MOCA-Ethernet adapters (https://www.actiontec.com/products/home-networking/ecb6200/) to create an Ethernet link over the coaxial cabling.
