Intel J1900 for openVPN?
-
Hi guys,
I posted a question a while back but never ended up having the time to do much; but now that I moved into a new place where I have access to FIOS. I currently have the 75Mbps down / 75 Mbps up package, bandwidth speed tests show that I am getting pretty close to that; sometimes even faster.
I want to run openvpn for connecting to the network and have a VPN connection open constantly for torrent traffic. I was hoping to build something with decent power. I remember that the J1900 had just recently came out; any reviews on these boards? Would one of them with 4GB of DD3 ram be enough? If it matters; internally I am using gigabit Ethernet for most machines. I might be using some other pfsense packages but I am not positive, I do know that 4 ports would be great. Any recommendations on for hardware?
Motherboard, CPU, ECT.
One big change is that I now have a basement so I do not care much about noise or size. I already have a new SATA SSD drive, 2 * 2GB DDR3 laptop memory sticks and a case or two but would be interested in anything affordable.

Don't use the J1900 !!!

Use a cpu with aes-ni

I like the way the guys in the thread go on and on…
In fact, they should have checked compatibility before buying.

Yep. ::)
That is a bad bios issue though not a hardware problem. The Supermicro J1900 board doesn't seem to have any problems for example. You get what pay for.Steve

I bought the gigabyte j1900 for a different project, both came DOA. Can't even get it to boot, just spins my case fan for a few seconds and shuts off.
I was thinking about getting this board http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Atom/X10/A1SRi-2758F.cfm
Any comments? I already have atleast 10 extra sticks of that memory, so I should be able to get 8GB, a 32gb SSD and a 120watt picopsu. Is $280 around the price range gig would expect for a CPU/motherboard combo for my needs? How would it compete with a gen 2/3 i3 without AES?
A big bonus is that card already has 4 NICs so I am even set there; any comment on those NICs? Lastly any recommendation on a solid case? I have a few but nothing that is nice and small

You should have no problem with that board. ESF/Netgate are supplying them. The seem very capable and will only get better when 2.2 is released with it's ability to use multicore far better.

That's the board I use at home. IPMI + 4 high-end Intel NICs makes it a great networking platform. Some catches though:
-
The USB 3.0 ports don't work at the moment. That leaves you with just two USB ports on the rear.
-
ECC RAM is required. 1.35V is recommended but I believe 1.5V still works.
-
It runs a little warm when passively-cooled. I've added an undervolted 40mm Noctua fan to mine.

I think also the A1SRi-2558F could be a valid solution for connections near 100/100. I am designing my unit with that board, home use.
